“And the award for the longest blog post title goes to….”
A month or so back, I had the pleasure of spending a couple of hours in the Microsoft Virtual Academy (MVA) studios with Laura Cruz, Program Manager on the System Center and Services team, to work on part 1 of a multi-part series of MVA courses all focused on Hybrid IT Management. “What is Hybrid IT Management?” I hear you ask. Well, at a high level, it’s the management, automation and protection of heterogeneous infrastructure, workloads, apps and services, on both Windows and Linux, across any cloud, regardless of whether it’s running in your datacenter, with a service provider, in the public cloud, on platforms such as Azure, or a combination of all of those.
The technologies that power Microsoft’s offerings in this Hybrid IT Management space are contained, for the most part, within a single suite of tools, namely, the Microsoft Operations Management Suite. Yes, MOMS is an acronym, however, we’ll go with the preferred OMS! OMS, if you’re not familiar, has a number of key capabilities, including log analytics, automation, cloud-enabled protection, and finally, tools to enhance security and compliance. Needless to say, it’s a comprehensive set of capabilities within a single package, and, if you’re an existing System Center customer, OMS complements your System Center investment to unleash new management scenarios. Now, you may be thinking, “is this relevant if I don’t use the cloud today?”. Absolutely. All of the technologies within OMS are just as applicable, if not more so, against on-premises infrastructure and apps, as they are to apps and services running in the public or service provider-hosted clouds. So, in a nutshell, you don’t have to be in the cloud, to use the cloud. Best of all, many of the components and capabilities within OMS have a free tier so you can try, and continue to use, without incurring a fee. You can check out the OMS website for more info on that.
So, the 4 key areas in OMS (and thus our Hybrid IT Management story): Log analytics, automation, cloud-enabled protection and security and compliance. Each of these key areas has, in most cases, a significant amount of technology underpinning them, therefore, we’re putting together not just a single ‘OMS’ course, but one that explores each of those areas in depth, to arm you with the relevant info you need to understand, and gain confidence in the new technologies.
Just tell me about the Hybrid IT Management course!
And that brings us nicely onto the focus of this blog post.
As I said earlier, Laura and I grabbed some time in the studio and delivered a demo-rich, comprehensive overview focused on understanding the log analytics capabilities, along with security and compliance, nicely packaged under the title “Visibility, Insights and Security Analytics”. Yes, marketing had a hand in the naming.
In the coming months, I’ll be returning to the studio, side-by-side with more of our engineering talent, to walk you through courses focused on automation, cloud-enabled protection, and who knows, maybe a course or two on stuff we haven’t even announced yet…stay tuned for those.
For now, all that’s left for me to do is encourage you to check out the course. It’s worth the 2 hours or so of your time, and by the end, you’ll have much more of an appreciation of just what log analytics means for you!
